As part of our Name Necklace Now launch week, we invited set designer and illustrator Amy Harris to take over the window of our Covent Garden store. Take a closer look: this is no ordinary display…

Amy carefully hand crafted a series of pastel hued figures small enough to make our window their very own playground. Miniature dungaree-clad people swung from Name Necklaces, inspected chains and made themselves at home amongst Tatty Devine jewellery.

“Wheee!”

Two couldn’t resist getting handy with a broom and sweeping up a pile of jump rings (the kind we use to put together your Name Necklace!)

“Golden chains are perfect with Glitter Gold perspex!”

“Phew! This is heavy!”

“I’m in the window of Tatty Devine? You’re yanking my chain!”

“Natsuki? Well, let me tell you ALL about her!”

This isn’t the first time Amy’s creative talents have been let loose at a Tatty Devine store. Our Spring Summer 2011 collection was showcased at our Brick Lane boutique in a glittering Ancient Egypt themed window display.

This gold mirror Pharoah Necklace was one of our favourite pieces from Spring Summer 2011.

A palace fit for Tutankhamun!

How many classic Tatty Devine pieces can you spot?

Ahoy there!

“Yum!”

We love Amy’s oversized interpretations of our Jarv Specs and Moustache Necklaces!

Thank you for creating such amazing displays, Amy! If you’d like to see more of Amy’s work, including incredible sets for Mr Porter and Esquire Magazine, head over to her website.

Sometimes you need a little outfit inspiration and here at Tatty Devine HQ, we’re no exception. After much debate, it turns out that whilst we like street style blogs and catwalk shows, we’re actually most inspired by each other! We love seeing how many different ways a piece can be worn and after posting our snaps on Facebook and Twitter, we saw how much you do too.

We’ll be bringing you Team Tatty’s favourite looks straight from our studio and shops. Here’s what we wore this week:

Harriet works fashion’s current neon trend in a gem print Kokon to Zai dress and coral cardigan. We first created this (now-retired) Banana Necklace back in 2009. Three years later, it still adds fruity cool to our wardrobes!

Emily goes dark with plum lips, sheer Carin Wester dress and Large Black Parakeet Necklace. You won’t find these in our shops – we produced a very limited number for use exclusively as press pieces!

Production Manager Becki layers the tumbling white blooms of our Posie Garland Necklace over her vintage leopard print shirt. Earlier this year, it was shot by legendary photographer Mario Testino for Vogue. Good choice, Becki!

We love fashion’s current 90′s revival! Mail Order intern Amy is currently working the look in our Junk Memory Heart Necklace and oversized white shirt.

After our big book launch at Drink Shop & Do, we wanted to have a little party to say thank you to everyone who helped to create and inspire our book. So we got together in our Brick Lane store.

Pink hair was a bit of a theme… Harriet wore hers with the Link Mega Necklace and a diagonals dress:

Harriet Vine

And Rosie wore a YSL dress from her favourite vintage shop in Paris:

Rosie Wolfenden

Here’s our A team of designers, writers and stylists who helped create the book. From left to right, meet Nina, Eithne and John.

Nina Ziegler, Eithne Farry and John William

Nina showed us her nifty technique for shortening the chain on a necklace – she just ties in a couple of knots. It’s clever and it looks cute and kooky:

The lovely people at Friels gave us some delicious cider.

And we were treated to a performance from performance artist Silvia Ziranek. We’ve made lots of jewellery for Silvia’s shows over the years (did you see our toilet lid earrings?) so it was lovely to have our very own instore performance from her.

Silvia Ziranek

Silvia took the message of our book, that you can make jewellery from literally anything, and created outsized bangles from cake boards, toys and found objects.

Around the bangles, she spun a clever monologue about jewellery and adornment.

Thank you Silvia!

Harriet and Rosie modelled the bangles…

…and other friends modelled Tatty Devine. Mark Pawson even wore a badge that came free with one of our very first catalogues.

He also wore a Tape Measure Belt from an early Tatty Devine collection (and kindly allowed us to get close enough to photograph it in action!)

Nobody could beat Mark’s vintage Tatty collection, but there were lots of other lovely pieces on display.

Rob Ryan proves that the large gold Pegasus Necklace is a good look on guys.

Look closely and you’ll see that this lady is in fact wearing TWO different wooden Oak Leaves necklaces together. Now that’s autumnal.

Thank you to Friels, Silvia, everyone who helped with the book, and everyone who came along – and you can see Silvia in action at Tate Britain on 22nd October.

Last night we finally saw the unveiling of the beautiful pansy brooches, made in collaboration with artist Paul Harfleet for his anti-homophobic campaign The Pansy Project. The brooches were crafted in our Brick Lane studio and handpainted by Paul himself and here he is modelling one for the opening night…

Paul Harfleet Pansy Project brooch for Tatty Devine

The Pansy Project sees photographs from all over the world where Paul has planted the flower in a location where homophobic abuse has occurred. “Queer Boy!” is one of three slogans used on the brooches, taken from titles of his photographs.

Others were enjoying the warm ‘summer’ night outside with a glass of wine, hearing all about the project from its creator Paul.

It’s weird working in a trendy area. We were already slightly freaked out when Sam Taylor Wood shot an REM video on Redchurch Street just around the corner from our shop and studio. Then Sony asked if they could use our Brick Lane store as a location for an advert. There was no money in it for us, but we said yes because it’s a good bit of publicity for our shop. (We’ve not technically sold out, right? Though we wouldn’t mind a free camera…)

The advert has the east London hipster girl nailed. Black bobbed fringed hair, peter pan collar playsuit, vintage bike. Though we’re not so sure about the boyfriend character. He’s a bit too clean cut.

And that’s not a real Tatty Devine shop girl, people. If you want to meet the real thing, pop in any time for a shop’n'chat with Kirsty, Amy or Emily. They weren’t even auditioned, but they do a sterling job every day, and make shopping as much fun as it looks in the ad.

What do you think?

Barbara Ryan curates Girls + Zines at Tatty Devine

Here’s Barbara Ryan of BFR Mag in front of the wall of zines she’s created for our new Brick Lane boutique show, Girls + Zines. We wanted to showcase the work of all the female zinesters out there who create and compile home-made magazines to share their thoughts, obsessions and lives.

zines

Spanning a wide range of publications featuring anything from offbeat illustrations and collage to heartfelt musings and humorous revelations, Girls + Zines celebrates the originality of female zinesters. Not only can zine enthusiasts browse our pop-up zine library, while sitting on comfy beanbags, there is also the chance to bring your own publications to display and swap at the in-store zine exchange!

Barbara’s hung all the zines on pegs on the wall, so bring along your own zine, find a spare peg, and become part of the show.

Got a zine you want to show off but can’t make it to London? Just post your zine to: Girls + Zines, Tatty Devine, 236 Brick Lane, London, E2 7LH.

BFR Mag

All featured zines will be archived at the Women’s Library after the show and zine converts can pick up a copy of BFR Mag and other publications at Tatty Devine Brick Lane. Come along and celebrate the original and inspiring handiwork of girls who zine – just don’t forget your reading glasses!
