Recognise Evie May? You should. She’s currently starring in our Spring Summer 2012 campaign and is a self-confessed “complete Tatty Devine addict”.

Evie May first caught our eye when we called out for models on our Facebook and a customer remarked just how much she looks like Frida Kahlo, one of the main inspirations behind the collection. We too loved her distinctive look and in no time at all, she was whisked to London and working it for the camera.

Evie May isn’t just a pretty face. When she isn’t rocking bananas as a headpiece, she is a prolific tweeter and runs her own fashion and lifestyle blog: What Evie Wore Next. It showcases Evie’s offbeat, retro inspired wardrobe and ever evolving style alongside interviews with up and coming designers and photographers.

How old are you?

I’m 16 years old.

When and how did you discover Tatty Devine?

I discovered Tatty Devine mid-way through 2010 when I was watching a Mighty Boosh audio commentary! Mr Noel Fielding was sporting a particularly fetching necklace and when the director asked him where it was from he replied “I don’t know if the costume lady made or if she found it at Tatty Devine.” I immediately felt intrigued by the name ‘Tatty Devine’ and with the aid of Google I was soon on your website and in love with every piece of jewellery in your collections!

What are your favourite pieces of jewellery?

I have so many pieces of Tatty Devine it’s so hard to choose! My blue Bunny Bow earrings mean a lot to me as I won them in the first ever Tatty Devine competition I entered. My Ying Yang ring also holds a lot of sentiment as I bought it on my first visit to your Brick Lane boutique.

However I also really love my Large Eye Necklace as I am obsessed with all things Egyptian and I also love my Sexy Legs Brooch as I had to hit up eBay in order to find one, so when I finally got it I was over the moon!

Plus when I met the Wombats, their lead singer even complimented me on it!

How would you describe your personal style?

I would say my personal style is very eclectic and always has tribute to vintage fashion in some way. One of my favourite eras of fashion is the 1950′s, so I may be wearing jeans and t-shirt but it’s usually teamed with a pair of striking 50′s heels or a 50′s hair-bow. However with the array of vintage fashion in my collection, I sometimes look like I’ve tumbled out of the wrong era! I like to use my clothes to channel my personality so my clothing is determined by my mood and I always like to stand out from the crowd with bright or bold pieces, so I tend to buy clothes not many other people around me are wearing.

How did you feel when you were picked to model for Tatty Devine?

I don’t think words could describe how happy and surprised I was! As you probably all know, I am a MASSIVE fan of your jewellery, so to be given the opportunity to model your beautiful pieces felt like a dream come true!

What was it like on the shoot?

I think it was one of the best experiences of my life! Everyone was thoroughly lovely to me, and considering I’ve never modelled before it was even better than I expected it to be! It all felt very laid back yet very glamorous at the same time and I think I’ll remember that day forever.

Did you like the hair and make-up?

I absolutely loved getting my hair and make-up done like Frida. It was so different to anything I’ve had before and the girls who did my hair and make-up were so talented so I was very happy with how it turned out. I just wish I had the girls to do my hair and make-up every day for me! (However we might have to tone down the mono-brow for everyday I think…)

Was there anything you didn’t like about the shoot?

The only thing I didn’t like about the shoot was the fact I had to leave behind all the gorgeous pieces of jewellery I modelled! They were all so beautiful and I can safely say this collection is truly amazing, but then I wouldn’t expect anything less from Rosie and Harriet!

Had you heard of Frida Kahlo before?

I had heard of Frida before! I’d watched the film about her life featuring Salma Hayek so I knew she was a very remarkable lady.

Were you aware you look like her?

I wasn’t really as I’d never really thought about it! However when you advertised for a model on your Facebook one of your lovely customers said I looked just like her and the more I thought about it, the more I started to notice the similarities between me and Frida. I feel very proud to look like Frida as she is so wonderful!

Did you mind having your eyebrows joined into a monobrow by the make-up artist?

I didn’t mind at all! It was the perfect tribute to Frida and with the floral attire I was in, it actually looked pretty good I think! It also made the photos look even more artistic and it made me feel much more like Frida.

What’s your favourite piece that you modelled?

Oh wow, this is so difficult, everything was so lovely! I was rather fond of the Large Frida Necklace and the Corn on the Cob Necklace however I thought the Large Parakeet Necklace made from green perspex was absolutely fabulous and the matching earrings made them the perfect statement pieces! I adore statement pieces and even though they were so different, in some ways it made me think of the Tiger Necklace as I imagine they could both really turn some heads!

Will the modelling experience affect your own style?

I think in some ways it definitely could. It has made me want to be a lot more adventurous with my hair styles and the floral prints in the dresses I wore definitely made me want to incorporate a lot more striking tribal themed pieces in my wardrobe. It has also given me the chance to discover the vintage fashion company Beyond Retro. All the clothes I wore on the shoot were from Beyond Retro and having looked more into their products I think more of their pieces will definitely be featuring in my vintage fashion collection very soon!

What’s your favourite item of clothing at the moment and why?

This is a very hard question as my wardrobe is rather extensive… (I’ll admit it, I’m a clothes-aholic) however I think my favourite piece is my knitted Union Jack knitted cardigan I picked up at Camden Market. It’s a one of a kind which is one of the reasons I love it so much! It feels very vintagey and patriotic too. The colours are bold and eye-catching and it’s definitely the item of clothing I get the most compliments on.

We love this best of British combination of Union Jack cardigan and classic Tatty Devine Chip Fork Necklace:

We noticed you do singing and acting – please tell us more!

I do indeed! Performing arts is one of the most important things in my life and I live for performing! I recently finished a tour around Liverpool of a stage production of the hit TV show ‘Glee’ and a few days ago I performed in St George’s Hall for the Liverpool Shakespeare Festival. However over the years, thanks to the fabulous opportunities given to me by such amazing projects around the city, I’ve been given the chance to perform with people such as Paul McCartney and Hayley Westenra! My biggest passion in life is music and when I get on stage I feel like I really come alive. I love changing characters throughout performances and of course I adore all the costumes too! I’d really love to make a career of singing and acting because I believe if I were to be successful in a job I loved, it’d never truly feel like ‘work’ for me.

What are your ambitions?

My ambitions are to do well in my exams, to move to London, to work for Tatty Devine at some point in some way, to get a recording contract, to write both music and literature, to stay true to myself and what I believe in and to be successful. If I did become a successful singer song-writer I’d very much like to be involved creatively too, as I am very imaginative and a budding director so I think I could apply this knowledge to perhaps designing my own tours and music videos! However, ultimately, my biggest ambitions are to win a Brit Award and I would also really love to cameo or perhaps even be the companion in Doctor Who! (Yes I am a massive sci-fi nerd…)

Tell us about your blog – when and why did you start it, what does it mean to you?

My blog, What Evie Wore Next, is dedicated to my fashion and my various different trips, from gigs to pop-up events, to exploring fabulous new shops and boutiques. I started What Evie Wore Next in early 2011, because I have always loved fashion from an early age and I just thought that blogging would be such a brilliant medium to show the rest of the world what fashion really means to me. Blogging means the world to me as it allows me to talk about the things I really love and puts me in touch with such lovely people. And as my readers will know, Tatty Devine features frequently on What Evie Wore Next from posts about trips to your fabulous boutiques or me just generally babbling about how much I love your jewellery!

What do you wish Tatty Devine would make next?

Wow, this is tricky! I think I’d love to see a collaboration between you lovely ladies and the wonderful Paloma Faith as I think you could create some really special pieces there. I’d also love to see some pug related jewellery as I am currently obsessed with those cute little dogs and maybe a Doctor Who collection, as I know some of you ladies at Tatty love Matt Smith (again my sci-fi nerd is showing…) Perhaps a Shakespeare related collection too! I’d love to see some Romeo and Juliet or A Midsummer Night’s Dream themed jewellery featuring in my collection and it would be a perfect tribute to the Bard along with your Quill Necklace too!

Thank you, Evie May. Good luck with your singing and keep blogging – you never know where it could lead! As a thank you for being our Customer of the Month (and featuring in our S/S12 shoot), we’ll be sending you something special to add to your growing collection.

Say hello to our first ever guest blogger, Shelly Mantovani from Toast Photography. Shelly is the perfect person to interview our new Customer of the Month – because she took the photographs at her wedding! And it was Shelly’s photographs that helped Julia catch our eye… Over to you, Shelly.

Hey hey hey! I’m Shelly from Toast Photography and I shoot people…. mostly with a
camera. I’m passionate about weddings and especially the kooky, alternative kind. It’s not
unusual for my kind of bride to be sporting a little bit of brilliance such as Tatty Devine – not to mention the bridesmaids too. After all, not everyone wants a sparkly tiara for their wedding. One of my recent clients, Julia, fell in love with the Tatty Devine Bunting Necklace and wore it with her first wedding dress (she wore two dresses! Yes two!).

I met Julia through Twitter (isn’t technology brilliant?). She was asking a question about what flowers would be blooming around the time her wedding was planned, and I answered (I have a degree in garden design).  I asked her to model for me for a shoot, which she looked amazing in – and then she asked me to shoot her wedding. I couldn’t have been more pleased. Most of my brides tend to be on the quirkier, interesting side (one of them declared I earned brownie points because I recognized one of her Tatty Devine pieces when we met!). Julia was a proper rock n roll bride. She doesn’t do things by halves and she’s got her own sense of style. She was just a joy to work with. My brides rock big style!

Julia, when and how did you discover Tatty Devine?
Through my best friend (and bridesmaid) Rosie – she sent me a link to two necklaces for my wedding.

What are your favourite Tatty Devine pieces?
I really love the moustache line!

What do you do when you’re not getting married?
I work in the fashion industry as a garment technologist. I really enjoy the role and the environment I work in. So much so that I have a tape measure tattoo on my upper arm and will soon be the owner of a pair of fabric scissors on my forearm… sewing machine to follow.

Which piece of Tatty Devine did you wear for your wedding?
I wore the red, white and blue Bunting Necklace. I chose this piece as I had a really loose colour theme of red white and blue based around my shoes! It is also a running joke between my family and friends that I have become pretty obsessed with bunting! Now that the wedding is over (sad face) my new craft is bespoke bunting, but I also have been happily sewing men’s ties.

And your bridesmaid wore Tatty Devine too?
Yes, she wore the Seagull Necklace and looked stunning.

Are there any other brands or styles you’re a fan of?
I am a big fan of vintage style jewelry so no particular brand, but for clothing I adore Asos (having worked there before my move to the north) and also I love Irregular Choice shoes.

How would you describe your style?
Quirky, vintage loving, an eclectic style of old vs. new.

How would you describe your wedding style?
Rockabilly DIY.

Tell us about making accessories for the wedding. Did you make all the buttonholes, etc?
One of my other bridesmaids made all the buttonholes for the wedding party, using scraps of fabric I had sourced and that were left over from the bunting and the pinwheels that we used on the tables as centre pieces instead of flowers.

My sister made my bracelets, her own jewellery for the day and the other statement necklace I was wearing.

Rosie also finished by heirloom bouquet for me – I had already wired and chosen the brooches but she had the flair to bring them all together for me.

Can you tell us the stories behind your wedding dresses?
My main dress, my mother made me – it was based on a vintage prom dress, with cute heart ribbon at the lining. The gown I changed into was paid for through monies that my Twitter followers raised for me. There’s a rather intriguing tale of love and loss for a dress that I saw on eBay! I was looking for a dress to wear for my friend’s hen do and spied this gorgeous La Sposa dress. The bidding was somewhere around £70. For a dress that I know cost the first bride in the region of £2000 this seemed such a bargain! I ummed and ahhed on Twitter, and finally caved in and started to bid. I kept losing out to higher bids and went to bed defeated. In the morning I saw that the dress didn’t sell to anyone as it didn’t meet its reserve. So once again I went back to Twitter and it was suggested that I email the seller to see if she would sell to me privately. It seemed like she was happy to sell the dress for £300, which was about £200 more than I had readily available. I tweeted that I had lost out on my dress and went back searching, happy in the knowledge that I was going to the wedding fair with my mother and sister at the start of March. Anyway, the next day I had a direct message on Twitter asking if I would be happy if my Twitter followers came together with a few quid each, to raise the money I needed to buy the dress! Of course I said, as long as no one would be put out, that would be a lovely idea! Anyway, a few weeks went by, and one day, when I was down in London doing customer fittings, I had a text message saying “I have £300 burning a hole in my pocket…” and the dress was mine.

How did you find it working with me?
We had a great time with you, Shelly. You’re such a fun and visionary photographer to work with. We had our engagement photoshoot with you earlier in the year, so we both knew that you were going to be amazing on the day. I felt you did us proud and the photos are such beautiful memories of our special day.

Anything else you wanna add?
I am just so thankful to my friends and family who helped us with the decorating, sewing and everything in the run up to the wedding! It was everything I could have ever wanted! I can’t wait to do my Rock the Frock shoot with Shelly wearing the same headdress I wore for my hand fasting ceremony with my husband at Glasto 2010.

Thank you Shelly for taking on guest blogging duties – you did us proud! And thank you so much to Julia for allowing us to share photographs from your big day. We’ll be sending you both some jewellery to say thank you.

Steph Fox and Cath Fox

Meet Steph Fox and her mum, Cath. We feel personally proud of Steph, because she started her career with an internship at Tatty Devine, and now she’s the Online Shop Assistant at Tate.

We’ve wanted to feature Steph as our Customer of the Month for a while, but we chose this month because we’ve just created a new special collection for Tate Shops. The Tate is a British institution, which you probably think of as huge, as big as the famous Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. But behind all the art are great people like Steph making everything happen. And behind all the great people like Steph, are great mums like Cath!

Cath Fox and daughter Steph Fox

Steph has a fantastic fox/scarf combination in this photo.

We took a peek into both their lives… and their jewellery collections.

When and how did you both discover Tatty Devine?

Cath: We first discovered Tatty Devine when the plectrum jewellery was featured in You magazine. We went up to visit the shop (small and ‘tatty’ in those days) to buy Steph’s first piece of jewellery for her birthday. I think it was her 16th.

Steph: It was a plectrum bracelet – still a fave! I remember it really vividly because it was the only one in the shop with a tortoiseshell plectrum on it, so I thought it was super special.

Cath: I think I bought the fried egg brooch then too.

We’ve just recreated the Fried Egg BroochIt was first made in 2003, so that’s probably when you visited. Here’s the new version:

Tatty Devine Fried Egg Brooch

And when did you do your internship with us, Steph?

Steph: It was in the summer of 2008, after my second year studying product design at uni.

What do you remember from your internship?

Steph: The best fun! All the interns and the team had lunch together every day, so you really got to know everyone and learn about all aspects of the business. Even the ‘Friday Tidy’ was fun – the music was blasting and everyone was chatting about their weekend plans…

It hasn’t changed much! What does your new job at Tate involve?

Steph: I’m the online shop assistant – it’s a really varied role which I love. I work on everything from  loading products to the site, to social media and marketing, to finding new limited edition prints to sell as online exclusives.

How did you get your job? Did internships help?

Steph: I started at Tate in customer service, then when my current job became available I applied and was lucky enough to get it. As well as my placement at Tatty Devine I’ve done a few others, and I think they are really great for helping you clarify your interests and learn more about the opportunities available.

What advice would you have for anyone starting out in the creative industries?

Steph: Hunt down opportunities, and be open to all of them! I didn’t know that a job like mine even existed when I was at uni, but now I love it! Think about people you admire, and see what you can learn from them – be bold and ask for their tips and advice, the worst they can do is say no, but I bet you’ll be surprised at how many say yes.

Cath, what do you do?

Cath: I now work for Lewisham Education Authority as a governors’ clerk – but BC (before children) I was a forensic scientist. It all contributes to an eclectic life.

Are there any stories about your amazing surname, Fox?

Cath: Fox is a great surname isn’t it? Even though lots of people have it.  People enjoy spotting all the fox items we have around the house: door knocker, doormat, lampshade, Fantastic Mr Fox picture… one of the displays even features the Tatty Devine fox jewellery!

Fox display

Do you borrow each other’s Tatty Devine?

Steph: I wouldn’t mind swapping, but I think we’ve chosen quite different pieces. I’m jealous of mum’s mini Gilbert and George Glasses Necklace, though, so perhaps I should borrow them more often.

Do you both want the same pieces, or are your tastes different?

Steph: When we dug out our collection to take these pics, I noticed that mum’s gone for the big, bold statement pieces in greys and silvers and blacks, and my collection’s much more higgledy piggledy – I just buy whatever captures my imagination!

Steph and Cath Fox's Tatty Devine collections

Steph's collection is on the left, Cath's on the right

Cath: On the whole we haven’t gone for the same Tatty Devine items although I loved the silver shoes series. We got Stephanie the ruby slippers pair for her 18th birthday (red sparkly was a theme of hers long before it was everywhere).  At the time it seemed wrong to get a pair for me just for fun – but I sometimes wish I had. In particular, I think there was a leopard print pair?

This was one of our favourite ever collections, too. We made solid silver shoe necklaces and earrings in coloured enamel. There was no leopard print, but the tiger print came in two colours:

And this was the red glitter colourway you bought for Steph:

Are there any other brands or styles which you’re both a fan of?

Cath: We’ve both been fans of Office shoes over the years – though I can only dream about wearing the shoes Stephanie does! And I seem to have  passed on my love of magazines to Steph.  And of course we both love Rob Ryan who we found out about through his association with Tatty Devine.

How would you each describe your style?

Cath: Accessories are very important in my style and  I have scarves, bags and jewellery ranging from the classic to the quirky. My wardrobe staples are white or pale coloured t-shirts with trousers and bright-coloured cardis and jackets  which I’ll then accessorize according to my mood. It’s great fun.

Steph: I wish I had a more defined personal style, but I think I’m still playing and learning what works.

Steph, are you inspired by your mum’s style?

Steph: My best friend always says my style is ‘all about the accessories’ so perhaps I’m inspired by her more than I realise! We have lots of things that are different, but I’m ALWAYS asking to borrow bits and pieces that she has… Mum’s a great collector, and buys lots of beautiful things just because she LOVES them, so its great to be able to take advantage of that.

What are your favourite Tatty Devine pieces?

Steph: My red sparkly shoes were for my 18th birthday so they’re pretty special… My red glitter Name Necklace is very precious too as I begged you to make it for me while I was an intern, and it was the first glitter red name necklace you ever did! I wear those two lots, but recently I’ve been wearing my Will and Kate Cameo Pendant to death!

How do you store your jewellery?

Cath: Some of my jewellery (when I’m not wearing it) is kept in boxes in drawers, but as you can see from the pictures lots of it is proudly displayed around our house!  It has always been my intention to get a wall cabinet of some sort so I can display all my collections – I’m still looking.

Tatty Devine display

We’ve got a new special collection coming out at Tate, inspired by colour theory. What’s your favourite piece, Steph?

Steph: I love the Colour Theory Bangle. The combination of clear and coloured acrylic feels really unusual. I loved it as soon as I saw the sample!

Tatty Devine for Tate Colour Theory Bangle

What would you get your mum from the Tate collection?

Steph: I can definitely imagine her wearing  the Colour Spot Charm Bracelet. It’s bright and fun, but she could still wear it to work.

Tatty Devine for Tate Colour Spot Charm Bracelet

What do you each wish Tatty Devine would make next?

Steph: I’ve just come back from a trip to Las Vegas, where I visited the Neon Boneyard. It’s a scrapyard full of old Vegas lights, from the 50’s to the present day. I’d love to see Tatty Devine’s take on the bright lights of Sin City. And another range for Tate of course!

We’ll get working on it, Steph! In the meantime, we’re sending you and your mum a piece of jewellery each to say thank you for being our Customer of the Month. Let’s see – red glitter for Steph, silver mirror for Cath, right?

“My name is Tamsin and I am a Tatty Devine addict, that’s probably the best place to start.”

Tamsin Hartnell

“I’ve recently moved from Somerset to North London where I currently reside with another Tatty Devine obsessive. I’m 26 years old (eek that is really scary) and I work in PR.”

Tamsin Hartnell

You might recognise Tamsin from our Facebook page (never has one girl tagged so many photos with those two magic words, Tatty Devine). Tamsin’s one of those disciplined/addicted people who takes a photograph of what they’re wearing every day. We’ve watched her progress from front room snapshots to London girl-about-town albums, and having got to know her through photos (and the occasional visit to our Brick Lane shop), we wanted to get to know the girl herself.

Hi Tamsin. How and when did you first discover Tatty Devine?
I am a mega fan of the electro girl band Robots in Disguise. I discovered Tatty Devine after I saw the necklace which was inspired by their excellent single The Tears. When I found out you had your own range of name necklaces I was hooked.

What are your favourite pieces of Tatty Devine?
All the pieces in my collection are all really special to me in their own way. One of my most recent items is the Good Morning necklace, which was given to me as a leaving present from the wonderful people I worked with in my last job. I also adore my Great Bear Brooch!

Tamsin Hartnell

How would you describe your style?
Eclectic on a budget! I love to blend vintage and high street, I don’t own any designer clothes. I was raised by fashionistas, both my parents are St Martin’s School of Art graduates, so from an early age I was encouraged to develop my own sense of style. Accessories have always been key for me. For instance when I was much younger I’d never go to playgroup without having the right colour shade bangles to match my outfits. I also have a rather impressive collection of hats, which range from a late 19th century top-hat, to bobble hats, and of course my Topshop bowler, which is definitely one of the best things I ever bought in a sale.

You often post photos on Facebook of what you’re wearing. When and why did you start doing this?
I originally started posting the daily pictures for a project I was putting together, which dealt with the idea that within the workplace it’s often difficult to assert your own personality in terms of dress. It’s easy to fall into a uniform. By focusing on my own tastes I wanted to show that you could still inject flare and your own individual sense of style into everyday work wear. After that it sort of snowballed…

Is this a daily routine?
In the beginning it was, yes. I wanted to showcase a different outfit every day. I also attempted to demonstrate how you could re-use pieces to create different looks, and give the appearance of updating your wardrobe.

Has posting photos of your outfits changed your style in any way?
Yes, definitely. It’s led me to experiment much more with my fashion choices. I’ve also learned more about my body shape. My confidence has also grown massively with all the positive feedback I’ve received.

Do you realise you’ve become a bit famous among Tatty Devine fans?
Infamous perhaps! If that is true then all I can say is that I feel very honoured, as all the Tatty Devine fans are so unique and inspiring.

We feel like we’ve seen your style change and develop over time. How do you think your style has changed?
Well, I’ve been encouraged to push the boundaries a bit with my own sense of personal style. I’m not sure it’s always worked, but in the future I’d rather look back at a million pictures of me getting it wrong but having a go, than think I just looked really boring.

What are you into at the moment, stylewise?
I’m constantly on the hunt for vintage. I am now completely mental for all the pop-up shops in Shoreditch, since my flatmate Lu introduced them to me a couple of months ago.

What’s your favourite outfit?
That would probably be the Topshop cream floral print summer dress, which I teamed with a vintage yellow and white polka-dot blazer I got in a market in Shoreditch. With this outfit I wore some purple tights from New Look, and a pair of imitation Ray Bans which I bought for £15.

Do you know how many pieces of Tatty Devine you have?
I believe I have around 15 pieces, a mixture of necklaces, brooches and hair clips. I am however now living with another avid Tatty Devine collector, Lu, so our stashes have grown exponentially. We have the habit of buying a lot of the same items, but in different colours.

Tamsin Hartnell

How do you store your jewellery?
I always read the information about caring for the jewellery. I store each of my pieces in their original boxes. [Tamsin scores extra brownie points with us for this!]

What else are you into apart from fashion?
I am a massive geek. I read History at university and I am planning to get a license for mudlarking [scavenging for historical objects in river mud]. I am also attempting to break into solo stand-up. Currently I’m working on lots of new material. And I am bravely attempting to have a go at NaNoWriMo (wish me luck). I love music as well. Although I play the recorder and the clarinet, I mostly enjoy watching bands perform. One of my favorite bands at the moment is Kitty, Daisy & Lewis.

What do you wish Tatty Devine would make next?
That’s a really hard question. I’d love to see Tatty Devine’s take on Tamara de Lempicka. That or flashing name necklaces, so I’d finally get my name in lights.

Thank you Tamsin. It’s been brilliant finding out more about the girl behind the pictures. Rosie loves Kitty, Daisy & Lewis too, and we all love the idea of mudlarking. Let us know what you find when you get your license… There’s no need to scavenge for your next piece of Tatty Devine, though – we’re sending you some jewellery to say congrats on being Customer of the Month.

Meet Julie Bigbow Mcgee, whose cheery grin and child-in-a-flower-shop style always catch our eye on Facebook:

Julie Bigbow Mcgee

We also noticed Julie last year on Take Me Out (if you’ve not seen it, it’s the ultimate guilty pleasure TV dating show). We had to know more!

Julie, where does the name Bigbow come from?

Bigbow isn’t my real name, but I set it as my Facebook name after I went on Take Me Out. It was my nickname backstage as I always wore one of my homemade bows or headbands! All the girls sent me pictures and friend requests as it was easy to remember. On my date I wore my Tatty Devine Cockatiel Ring.

Here’s Julie with some of the Take Me Out girls (loving the purple tights):

How did you discover Tatty Devine?

I found Tatty Devine a few years ago when a little shop opened in Norwich called Soho Hip. My first piece was the Horse & Carriage Necklace. I still love it. Ever since then, if anyone wants present ideas for me, Tatty Devine is always a winner!! My favourite piece is my big white Cockatiel Necklace.

How would you describe your style?

I wear Tatty Devine and N2 les Nereides all the time so I always have one or the other on – or both. I bought the Tatty Devine sunglasses from John Lewis for summer.

We think Julie likes her sunglasses:

Do you make your own accessories, too?

Yes, I like making brooches and hair accessories. I just sent Natalie Booth from Take Me Out this leopard and feather fascinator that I made for her:

What else are you into?

I love running but haven’t been for ages as I fell down some stairs and tore a ligament in my foot! Ouch! I also make cards for family and friends, and me and my daughter also ALWAYS make each other our birthday cards.

What’s your favourite outfit?

It varies all the time but I have to say that yellow is my absolute FAVOURITE colour so anything yellow. And at the moment I always wear my Tatty Devine Banana Necklace with anything yellow!

You seem like a very smily person – what’s your secret?

I always look on the bright side of life – and I always see a funny story to tell even in a miserable situation. I love to laugh and to have people laugh with me! People make me smile. I am generally a very happy girl!

What do you wish Tatty Devine would make next?

I think Tatty Devine should make some quirky bags. I like the ones in Octopus. I have watering can, teapot and car bags!

Thank you Julie! We’ve not got any bags to send you, but we’ll be sending you some jewellery to say thank you for being our Customer of the Month. We’ll try to pick something yellow!

If you’d like to be our Customer of the Month, here’s how to get noticed: tag Tatty Devine any time you post a photo of you wearing your jewellery on Facebook. Or mention @tattydevine when you post photos of you wearing your jewellery on Twitter.

We’re inspired by Julie to raid the scarf drawer this weekend and tie some big, big bows in our hair.

Sometimes the same name pops up again and again on the orders we get at the Tatty Devine studio. After a couple of emails with a customer, and a phone call or two, we suddenly realise we’re getting to know you!

We began to recognise Sarah O’Brien as one of our most loyal customers way back when we only took orders over the phone (yep, before the days of internet shopping). We suspected she’d built up quite a Tatty Devine collection, but we didn’t realise just how big!

Tatty Devine bracelets

Tatty Devine necklaces

Sarah sent us photos of her full collection. She owns vintage pieces that even Tatty Devine designers Rosie and Harriet don’t own! We had to find out more.

That’s a lot of Tatty Devine! Do you know how many pieces you have?

I counted after taking the photos and it’s 131 pieces! (Make that 132 as I just bought the Banana Brooch this week.)

How do you store all your jewellery?

I have one jewellery box and the rest stays in the original boxes.

How do you find a particular piece of jewellery when you need it?

It’s pretty hard! I have a good memory though, so I know what I own and roughly where I will find it.

How do you decide what jewellery to wear?

It depends on the occasion. When I was at uni I would layer it and wear several bracelets and brooches at once. I have the red Tape Measure Rosette brooch and always wore it on my coat, so I would constantly have strangers stopping me in the street and asking me where it was from! It gets noticed because it is so unusual.

What are your favourite pieces of Tatty Devine?

I have so many! The Record Bag has been used on many a night out. I love my Ghost Brooch, the Peas Bracelet, the Domino Bracelet, any of the Pirate collection pieces, my Mittens Pins, and the Maze Keyring. The Horse and Carriage Necklace is stunning. The Knitted Prawn Brooch is so cute. There are also pieces I missed out on like the Cocktail Umbrella Bracelet, and others I wish I had bought like the Pearly Anchor Large Brooch or Necklace.

What else are you into apart from jewellery?

Film is my passion. I love all kinds of music, too, and I’m always going to concerts, especially Lady Gaga who I have seen seven times in the last couple of years. On her new album she has a song about a unicorn, so next on my Tatty Devine list is one of the unicorn pieces to wear when she is next on tour. She is amazing. You will also find me in museums and art galleries seeing the latest exhibitions.

Do you have any other collections?

I have a lot of original film posters and press kits. Also I loved the recent Royal Wedding and have been collecting lots of memorabilia. I got the Tatty Devine Cameo Brooch and Ring to add to it.  Anytime I go to a concert I have to buy the most unusual piece of merchandise available, and so far a toothbrush at a Killers gig is in the lead!

When and how did you first discover Tatty Devine?

It was about 10 years ago when the TV programme This Morning did an item about it. I can remember seeing the Tape Measure Rosette brooches and wanting one so I went to the shop in Brick Lane and bought two of them. I also got the Plectrum and Record Bracelets at the same time, and then became a regular visitor along with my sister who also has quite a collection herself.

How would you describe your style?

I would say I don’t dress over the top but my jewellery is always a statement. I can be wearing jeans and a top and then accessorise it with Tatty Devine.

Sarah O'BrienOnly the bear necessities for Sarah… and her Tatty Devine Record Bag, of course!

What’s your favourite outfit?

For the past few months it has been a black jumper dress with a big white owl on the front. I wear it with leggings and black Ugg boots. I am in love with owls at the moment. (Owls, you say? Keep your eye on our website over the coming months, Sarah…)

What do you wish Tatty Devine would make next?

Maybe a big jewellery box for my collection? Or some watches as I have the Knitted Watch Bracelet and would love to see what you could do with designing a real working one.

And our final question: would you ever sell your collection?

I would never sell it as each piece means so much and reminds me of a great night out or a day when I wore it and it made me happy.

Thank you Sarah. We’ll be sending you some jewellery to say thank you for being our Customer of the Month – it will be hard to find a piece you don’t already have but we think you need a Unicorn Necklace for Lady Gaga’s next tour.

If you’d like to be our Customer of the Month, here’s how to get noticed: tag Tatty Devine any time you post a photo of you wearing your jewellery on Facebook (we’ll ask to add you to our Fan Photos album). Or mention @tattydevine when you post photos of you wearing your jewellery on Twitter.

What do you think of Sarah’s collection? Even we’re jealous!

Mira Boutique in Tatty Devine Name Necklace

Meet Mira Boutique (yes, that is her real name!). Mira first caught our eye when we saw her handing out cakes at London Rollergirls bouts. We couldn’t resist picking her as Customer of the Month after she appeared in Pick Me Up magazine a few weeks ago, showing off her amazing fast food tattoos!

Mira Boutique in Pick Me Up

How did the Pick Me Up article happen, Mira?

They asked on Twitter if anyone has any collections.  I collect fake food and have lots of food tattoos.  I was wearing the Tatty Devine Crisp Necklace in that article! It really made me laugh when it came out.

Tell us more about your tattoos – how do you decide what to get done?

If I like how something looks then I usually want to get it tattooed on myself.  A lot of my tattoos are things from car boot sales and jumble sales.  Like my casserole dish, and my favourite poodle tattoo which I got copied from some wrapping paper I got at a car boot sale. I love it because she is just so cute!

This sausage dog is as amazed as we are by Mira’s tattoos – or perhaps she’s just surprised to see Puss in Boots on Mira’s shin!

Mira Boutique tattoos

Do you have any Tatty Devine tattoos?

I kind of do! I have a pierrot tattoo and I own a few of the Tatty Devine Pierrot items. My flat is full of pierrot knick-knacks.  I also got a party ring tattoo on my arm just before the Tatty Devine Party Ring stuff came out.

The swallow under Mira’s Name Necklace and Dollar Eye Pendant also reminds us of our Swallow Brooches. Mira’s glow-in-the-dark Name Necklace was a special option we offered  for Halloween one year.

What are your favourite Tatty Devine pieces?

Oh, that’s hard! The Crisp Necklace is one that I wear a lot, and the Pierrot one.  I did have the glow-in-the-dark ‘Boutique’ necklace in the picture, but it got burnt in a house fire. Then I got it made again and but I broke it celebrating the Royal Wedding a bit too hard (I also smashed up my arm and my left knee) so I will be getting another one made soon I hope! (We think we can fix that…) The pyramid stuff also is beautiful.

When did you first discover Tatty Devine?

I’m not sure – I have loved plastic and acrylic jewellery since I was a kid. I know the first time I saw Tatty Devine I HAD TO HAVE IT!!!

How would you describe your style?

I have been described as wearing clothes either for 8 year olds or 80 year olds! I like bright colours and prints.

What’s your favourite outfit?

Right now I’m in love with a T-shirt I got from Philip Normal’s Happy Shack in Camden.  It’s a really bright 80s one with clashing colours.  I love bows, short skirts, dresses – I don’t own any trousers at the moment – knee high socks, coloured tights.  I also bought a 60s dress yesterday that I think I’m going to be wearing a lot.

Mira shows off a sushi lunch box given to her by Philip Normal. “It takes batteries to stop your fish going rotten.”

Do you ever get stopped in the street and asked about what you’re wearing?

Yes, I do. Sometimes tourists ask to take photos of me, or sometimes people ask why I look like an idiot!

Are you still in the London Rollergirls?

Nope, I love the Rollergirls and love hanging out with them but I’ve swapped my wheels for blades and have taken up ice dance. I used to take figure skating lessons when I was younger and must be crazy to take it up again as I had some pretty horrific injuries on the ice when I was a teenager!

Where did your surname ‘Boutique’ come from?

I always like how everything sounds in French. I could listen to French hip hop and swearing all day long!  I love words ending in ette and et and have loved the word since I was a kid.  I also love shops! I want to live in a shop.

What do you wish Tatty Devine would make next?

Oh, so many things! Matadors as I fancy them all, a McDonalds collaboration (umm… unlikely, sorry!), ice skating stuff… I love seeing what Tatty Devine come up with – it never disappoints!

Thank you Mira! We’ll be sending you a gift to say thank you for appearing on our blog.

We first spotted Jools when she posted this photo on Facebook:

Jools on the tube in Tatty Devine

The way her shoes match the tube doors made us happy, along with that Mr Whippy t-shirt and Moustache Necklace. Ever since then, the words “Jools has tagged you in a photo” were guaranteed Facebook gold.

But Jools doesn’t often ride the underground – you’re more likely to see her out and about on her Pashley bike, as she’s been blogging her adventures in cycling and fashion on her Vélo-City-Girl blog.

Jools picks up her LadyVelo Name Necklace

We’ve watched as Jools’s Tatty Devine collection has grown – she came to our Brick Lane sample sale looking for statement necklaces, then blogged about her bike ride to pick up her Name Necklace, and hit up Ebay until she’d collected all three different dagger necklaces we’ve ever created.

Jools in Tatty Devine dagger and cutlass necklaces

This lady is on it. We’re worried that she knows more about Tatty Devine than we do.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m Jools Walker (also known as Lady Vélo), 28 years old and I’m from and live in east London. I currently work in education, but I spend a lot of my free time on my favourite things: cycling, fashion, photography and blogging… and eating nice cakes.

How would you describe your style?

I would say it’s very eclectic, from my ever-changing hair down to my shoes! I love the freedom of mixing high street with designer pieces, and beautiful vintage items too. I could be dressed like a girl from Mad Men one day, and then be in skinny jeans and electric pink brogues the next! Accessorising is a major part of my style, so jewellery features heavily in what I wear. I’m definitely a self-confessed wardrobe magpie – a gatherer of shiny pretty things, which I put together to make my own fashion statements.

Jools outside Aubin & Wills

How did you become a Tatty Devine customer?
I’m a local girl, and became aware of Tatty Devine on a trip to Brick Lane. The boutique looked like a magical jewellery box and the moment I stepped in, I was in love! I then started treating myself to pieces whenever I could and it’s also fantastic to know that it’s supporting an original and brilliant female design team too!

What are your favourite pieces?
I’m a MASSIVE Tatty Devine fan and have an ever growing collection… my favourites have to be the Tiger Necklace, my prized Dagger/Cutlass collection and of course my special “LadyVélo” name necklace I had made to celebrate the 1st anniversary of my blog and cycling.

Jools's Tatty Devine collection

Tell us about your bike!
I ride a “Buckingham Black” Pashley Princess (named ‘Frankie’) which is a traditional ladies loop frame bicycle. I adore classic bikes – she is my pride and joy and a total pleasure to cycle around London on – especially with the big wicker basket and the ding-dong bell! I believe that fashion and cycling can go hand in hand – there is no reason why riding means you have to sacrifice style while doing it… I say you can keep it chic on two wheels!

As a regular cyclist, what style tips do you have? Is there anything you have to avoid wearing for safety reasons?
Make sure that you are comfortable in what you are wearing on your bike, feel confident (as that really shines though when you are cycling – people notice!) and if you’re wearing a super-long necklace, you might want to think about tucking it in if there is a sudden strong breeze… I have learnt about this the hard way!

If you’re going out for a bike ride, does your style differ from days when you don’t ride your bike?
My style remains the same whether I’m on my bicycle or not. I really believe that there should be no wardrobe difference there… my bike reflects my style and personality so my wardrobe will always be pretty when on two wheels.

Tell us about your blog.
I’ve been running my blog Vélo-City-Girl since March 2010. It’s a mixture of my two loves: cycling & fashion. Vélo-City-Girl covers these elements, along with other adventures on my Pashley, and my fashion advice for girls who want to cycle in style. Keeping the blog has had a huge and positive impact on my life: I love how it has linked me with like minded people from the UK and across the world and has brought me new friends and followers.

Style-wise, it’s made me even more determined to remain chic and keep on mixing up my wardrobe, especially if it inspires other female cyclists in London (and beyond) to get on their bikes and do the same!

Do you ever get stopped in the street and asked about what you’re wearing?
Yes, I do, which is awesome – especially as I tend to put my outfits together through wardrobe remixing and not follow the latest trends all the time. It’s wonderful to know that people like my style… I tend to get lots of attention when I’m wearing my Tatty items too.

What’s your favourite outfit?
My favourite outfit will always be one that makes me feel good and gets me smiling. Current fave at the moment is teaming my favourite Lanvin T-shirt with any of my skinny jeans, and one of my pairs of Vivienne Westwood jelly shoes.

You recently completed your collection of all our dagger jewellery! How did you do it?
Indeed I did! My quest started when I saw the Cutlass Necklace you did for the Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration launch party – I fell for it instantly! Once I got that one and then saw the gorgeous one on your blog for Charlotte Delall / Paris Fashion Week 2011, I was a girl on a mission to find that one, as I knew it wasn’t going to be released. A very lucky search on eBay (and some tactical bidding!) later and it was mine! I knew about the original Cutlass for the “Treasure” collection, but sadly I missed my chance to get one when it was released… I had to find it as that would be my mission complete: this was another lucky eBay find. I have to say, those three necklaces are the pride and joy of my Tatty collection – they’re beautiful!

Thank you Jools – we’ll try to find a piece of Tatty Devine that you don’t have as a gift to say thank you for appearing on our blog.

Good luck!

This month’s Customer of the Month is a bit of a double whammy!

Burlesque performer Miss Miranda first caught our eye back in December, when she posted this saucy snap on her Facebook page:

Miss Miranda Moustache Necklace and Pasties

Costume designer Lady Lucie made the moustache pasties, so we spoke to Lady Lucie first to ask what inspired them. She said:

“A whole selection of things! I have a strange passion for women in moustaches, so sticking a pair on Miss Miranda made a whole lot of sense! One of my close friends makes a range of moustache waxes, so they feature in conversation quite a lot. Also, I have a lot of male moustachioed friends and we all excitedly plan their mo-styles for Movember. And, of course, I own the Tatty Devine moustache necklace!! So, yes, moustaches are on my mind a lot!!”

Miss Miranda says “All credit must go to the amazing Lady Lucie for creating the moustache costume!! I didn’t even know what I was going to be wearing for that show until a couple of days before, and the moustache pasties were a surprise on the night – I absolutely love them! Lucie is a latexy genius.”

Another costume that caught our eye was a red glitter Name Necklace with matching pasties!

Red Glitter Name Necklace and Pasties

We asked Miss Miranda what came first – the necklace or the pasties?

“Ha ha, the pasties!” she says. “I make all my pasties myself using leather, glitter and Swarovski crystals… They do go beautifully together – I just love anything red and glittery!!”

Miss Miranda says she started out in burlesque when it was “still a really tiny scene with only two or three clubs operating in London”. She’s performed at “pretty much all of the burlesque clubs in London as the scene has expanded, and overseas in Madrid, Milan, Moscow… I have six or seven acts that I perform regularly, and I also put together one-off acts for club nights. I did a special Laura Palmer Twin Peaks act last year involving coffee and cherry pie!”

She has a crafty approach to costumes: “I make all my costumes either from scratch or by customising things that I’ve found. I always want everything to be a one off. My hair, make up and accessories are an essential part of all my costumes, not just an added extra. I’ll incorporate specific jewelry combinations and elaborate hair fascinators!” She says she likes “extreme jewelry… There’s a bit of a goth in me!! Oh, and I have to have massive high heels – at least 5 inches, otherwise I just don’t feel dressed up!”

It looks like her hair adds a good few inches, too:

Miss Miranda Name Necklace

Lady Lucie set up her own costume company, Lady Lucie Latex, in 2006 and has a studio in Hackney just a hop, skip and a jump from Tatty Devine. She says, “We spend our days drinking tea, listening to hair metal and musicals, gossiping and giggling whilst making up the Lady Lucie orders. There’s often spontaneous nudity when one or other of us has to try on an item for size.” It sounds just like the Tatty Devine studio (minus the nudity).

We like this popcorn-flavoured shoot featuring Miranda:

Lady Lucie Popcorn costumes

(Popcorn photos by Adam Robertson)

Lucie says she’s a HUGE Tatty Devine fan. “The necklaces are definitely my faves. I have several pieces, including the Moustache Necklace and a ‘Lady Lucie’ Name Necklace and Swallow Earrings. At the moment I’m coveting the pink kiss necklace – it will perfectly compliment the lipsticky smooches that always seem to adorn me by the end of nights out!”

She says that “other people on the scene to look out for are Pippa the Ripper, who’s an amazing hula-hooper, and a really hot dark electro band called Vile Electrodes. Pippa and the Vile Electrodes are Tatty Devine fans too!”

Miss Miranda’s next performances are with British Lucha Libra wrestling act Lucha Britannia this Friday 15th April at the Resistance Gallery in Bethnal Green, and on Thursday 21st April at the Easter Hott Date in Birmingham.

Miss Miranda and Lady Lucie, you’re our Customers of the Month! We’re sending you each a special surprise package to say thank you for letting us show off your style.

Good luck!
