Team Tatty love any excuse for a night out and there’s no better occasion than a good friend’s birthday. This, however, was no ordinary soirée – we were headed for Amy Lamé’s Unhappy Birthday.

In preparation for a riotous night of teen angst, Morrissey worship and party poppers, Amy had asked us to create some exclusive props. We coaxed our fringes into quiffs, practiced our best Moz impressions and arrived at the Camden People’s Theatre buzzing with excitement. Just what is an ‘Unhappy Birthday’? The answer came in Amy’s lovingly made fanzine to The Smith’s maudlin front man.

We love Amy’s photo diary of her pilgrimage to Morrissey’s birthplace, Manchester.

You can’t have a birthday party without a cake. Sadly, it ended up on Amy’s face rather than on our plates.

Yes, that’s right. This is the perspex boombox prop we made for the show. Turn it up, Amy!

As the biggest Morrissey fan in the world, Amy had themed the party games accordingly. Moz-e-oke, anyone?

Emily even caught the t-shirt that Amy tore off in true rock god style during the finale!

Backcomb your quiff, grab some gladioli and join Amy in celebrating her Unhappy Birthday. Find nationwide tour dates and tickets here.

For her new show, you’re invited to celebrate performer extraordinaire Amy Lamé’s birthday – and she’s hoping a very special guest will make an appearance. Morrissey – icon for the bookish, bespectacled weirdos of the world – is invited too. A seat is reserved for him… will he ever arrive, perhaps clutching a bunch of flowers and a gift?

Unhappy Birthday cracks open the cult of celebrity and fandom; flays fat, faith and sexual identity; probes the pains of growing up; and cross examines a curious nostalgia for a time that may never have existed except in the bedroom of our imagination. It includes props made by non other than Tatty Devine – watch out for giant perspex pieces popping up throughout the show.

Unhappy Birthday begins with a bang from 1st-12th May 2012 at the Camden People’s Theatre in London, where there will be an exhibition of rare photographs of The Smiths and Morrissey by Tom Sheehan. It will later be followed by a nationwide tour and you can buy tickets here.

To celebrate this unhappy occasion, we have one pair of tickets to win for the date and venue of your choice. That’s not all, too – the lucky winner will also receive an exclusive name necklace inspired by the poster boy of melancholy himself: Morrissey.

To win, just answer this question:

How would you turn an unhappy birthday into a happy birthday for a friend?

Leave your answer as a comment (click here and scroll to the bottom), and we’ll ask Amy Lamé to pick her favourite as the winner! The closing date is 12 noon on Tuesday 1st May.

Bonjour!

Bonjour!

When we were invited to Paris to be part of the Colette Carnaval, in celebration of the 15th birthday of the world famous concept store, of course we said “oui”!

The air was filled with candyfloss as we led a workshop to help everyone make their own super special Bunting Necklaces.

Buckets of bunting flags

Some people even created bunting headbands:

We still had time to experience the rest of the Carnaval, which saw a whole host of designers staging activities and exhibitions including hook-a-duck, dance classes, a skate park, a bouncy castle, film viewings – and that’s not even mentioning all the amazing food and drink:

Sweets, sweets, sweets

For once our friend Jeremy Scott wasn’t very talkative!

We had such an amazing time, we almost didn’t want to come home. See more photos from the workshop and our trip on Flickr. Au revoir!

There’s nothing more exciting on a damp and dreary Saturday night than heading to the first London Rollergirls bout of the new year. As proud sponsor of the LRG, we couldn’t wait for an evening of fast and furious skating and cheering on our favourite teams. Never been to a live action roller derby before? It goes a little like this: girls on roller skates, sparkly spandex, knee pads and pun-tastic player nicknames (think along the lines of ‘Grievous Bodily Charm’).

We arrived to find Harbour Grudges storming round the track in the face of strong opposition from rival team, the Suffra Jets. It might have been cold outside but every player worked up a sweat as they fought for the all important top position in the league tables. Competition was fierce and we alternately whooped and gasped as girls racked up points and took some spectacular falls.

Guess who we spied proudly wearing her custom name necklace? Suffra Jet Mama Mash Bash’s purple lettering perfectly matches her helmet and lets the other team know who’s in charge. Not only is Mama Mash Bash a force to be reckoned with on wheels, she is also a big fan of Tatty Devine – everybody in her family has their own name necklace… even her puppy!

With three more double header league games coming up, there’s every opportunity to catch the London Rollergirls in action. You’ll be digging out your old roller skates in no time!

Last week we hit Soho to share some Valentines love with our friends at The Society Club. Tatty Devine’s designers Rosie and Harriet led a free workshop to make glittering brooches as featured in the How To Make Jewellery with Tatty Devine book.

While we all started out with good intentions, for most of us our sparkly love tokens soon became gifts to ourselves, with only a few making it to their intended recipients.

And they call it puppy love….

You’re not gonna reach my telephone…

Some very a-peeling brooches were made…

Some got lucky in love…

This girl made a brooch to fawn over:

Some spookily good crafting went on:

Adding initials makes a necklace even more personal:

Triple glitter!

We had a great evening. A big thanks to everyone who came along and the lovely people at The Society Club who made us feel so welcome. After all that cake and crafting we were dog tired, and there was nothing left for us to do but go home for a little nap.

Movember

Thank you to everyone who bought moustache jewellery during Movember – you helped us to raise £150 for charity. We donated 50p for every facial hair accessory sold online and in our stores, plus an extra donation in honour of a customer called Amelia, who got a Tatty Devine moustache tattooed on her finger.

Thanks everyone!

Today we were invited to be experts at an exciting event called Make It, Sell It for young entrepreneurs at the British Library’s IP Centre. There were lots of amazing people with brilliant ideas who showed us their wares.

Some of the other experts in our session included Georgina Blain from Etsy who was a real expert on how to properly market your products, Kate Bassett who talked to everyone about the ins and outs of the press, and how to get your products seen out and about, Nick Kaplony from Artquest, a really terrific resource for anyone needing support and advice in the world of visual arts, as well as lots more.

This is the lovely and talented Julie Kouamo, who screenprints onto fabric to make beautiful and unusual textiles.

We spoke about everything from intellectual property and design rights, to people’s change in attitude, pushing for more localised products instead of mass manufactured.

This is  the wonderful Frances Taylor, the marketing manager at the British Library. She took brilliant Polaroids of everyone who was involved in the event.

Rosie and Harriet talked to everyone about how Tatty Devine started, from having their first market stall at Portobello market, to where they are now with two London stores and over 200 stockists worldwide.

This is Ameena who makes bespoke books and journals, with covers that aren’t just beautiful but very tactile too!

There was definitely an importance message about valuing yourself and your product, and not being shy. Rosie said “You need to love what you make, so other people will love it too.” She spoke about how you need to know that your pieces are special – aim high!
