How It's Made: Folk Art Jewellery

You might have already guessed that we're slightly obsessed with paper cuts. From our collaboration with Rob Ryan to the delicate artworks that adorn our studio walls, we're simply fascinated by the art form so it was no surprise when paper cut-esque patterns started taking shape in Harriet's sketchbook earlier this year. Widely considered the most beautiful example of paper cutting in the world, Wycinanki was a key inspiration behind our new Contemporary collection. The art of Wycinanki originated in Poland in the mid 19th century as a colourful means of decorating the home, where they were hung upon wooden beams. Using sheep shearing scissors, intricate rural scenes and beautiful symmetrical shapes are recreated in single or multiple layers of bold colour. Every single piece is a labour of love and the skill is passed down from generation to generation, ensuring that this form of folk art continues to this very day. Intrigued? Join us to go behind the scenes in our London studio and discover how the new Folk Art jewellery is made: Harriet and her assistant Siff began by hand drawing and painting natural motifs to form patterns inspired by Wycinanki. From lush green leaves to blooming flower buds and feathers to miniature hearts, each detail went through several design and edit stages to ensure it was perfect for the finished piece. When Rosie and Harriet gave the designs the final sign off, they were digitally printed onto smooth birch wood to become the first stage of our wearable version of a paper cut: Next, a very special delivery of digitally printed birch wood headed downstairs at our London studio (just around the corner from our Brick Lane store!) to our Laser Cutting Manager Becs. With an expert eye for detail, she prepared the wood and laser cut the designs to form the individual elements for each piece of jewellery. Studio star Annick then carefully hand varnished each vibrant pattern to add shine and create a beautiful finish: After Annick has varnished these Folk Art Statement Necklaces, they will dry in the studio before being pieced together by hand and finished with an adjustable golden chain.
