Tatty Devine at the British Museum
August 13, 2018 - Charlotte Prichard
Last Saturday we brought our jars of jewellery findings and rolls of ribbon to the British Museum, to run a Day of the Dead themed jewellery-making workshop. Get your morbid on!
The museum has a Digital Discovery Centre sponsored by Samsung, with lots of opportunities for children and teenagers to get their hands on advanced technology. Our workshop was for under 18s (sorry adults!).
Spoiler alert: our next collection is Mexican-inspired, so we took along some sample pieces for inspiration. Consider this a little taster of what's to come...
First our workshoppers looked at museum images and jewellery for inspiration, then Harriet showed everyone how to turn their ideas into artwork on the computers.
After the perspex pieces for this parrot necklace were lasercut, they were laid out on top of the original sketch ready to be put together.
Then it was time to get sticky with glue, and pull out the pliers and jump rings to put it all together.
Embellishments like silk flowers, glass beads and Swarovski crystals made the finished pieces sparkle. Love the little crystal mouths on this skull necklace. Very Indiana Jones!
This cat has x-ray eyes AND an x-ray effect body:
It was great seeing everyone's imagination come to life (or rather death!). Thank you to everyone who took part.
