Inside Jupiter Artland
Situated just outside Edinburgh, Jupiter Artland is the gem of this Scottish city. From the rolling hills of Charles Jenks’ Cells of Life, to Tracy Emin’s 2022 commission I Lay Here For You, to the rainbow-splashed swimming pool by Joana Vasconcelos, this award-winning sculpture park is over 100 acres of meadows scattered with contemporary art.
Home to upside mimi ᴉɯᴉɯ uʍop, an installation that invited visitors to a disused candy-coloured shop in a forest to watch a short animation featuring a fairy-tale-inspired doll, Mimi, come to life. Scottish artist, Rachel Maclean’s 2021 permanent commission became the inspiration for our latest art jewellery collection, Tatty Devine X Rachel Maclean.
What better way to document this jewellery collaboration than with the artist herself modelling her work-turned-jewellery at Jupiter Artland? See the results for yourself!
On hand with hot water bottles, stoking fires and guiding us through the woodland: we sat down with hostess-with-the-mostest and Arts and Communications Manager at Jupiter Artland, Eleanor, to talk about the contemporary sculpture park!
Hey Eleanor, so, Jupiter Artland has re-opened for the summer - we just need the sun now! We know our community can’t wait to visit… for those who haven't explored this incredible institution before, can you sum up the magic of Jupiter Artland in 5 words?
Cosmic – Joy-filled – Unexpected - Boundary-pushing - Wonderland
Beautiful! As you know, we’ve just launched our NEW jewellery collection with the Scottish artist, Rachel Maclean, whose work is nestled amongst the trees at Jupiter Artland. What was the best part about working with Rachel on her ‘upside mimi ᴉɯᴉɯ uʍop’ installation?
Entering the world of mimi – Rachel creates such enticing and deep universes for her films that they can be explored on so many levels. It was an honour to see these being crafted and shaped both in the Artland at Jupiter and on the High Street in Perth for her JUPITER+ pop-up Mimi Store.
The world of mimi is an amazing place to be immersed in! Before we plan our next visit, is there anything fun we should catch at Jupiter Artland this year?
Yes always! Our exhibition this year is by Lindsey Mendick, another incredible world-building artist, who uses clay to create installations full of personal anecdotes, timeless myths and popular culture references. She works predominantly with clay, which has historically been associated with decoration and domestic craft, Mendick acknowledges and subverts these associations in a wonderfully playful way.
We are working with Edinburgh Art Festival to create a one-day celebration of Lindsey’s work on Saturday 19th August – which will pull together artists, performers, and poets curated by Lindsey Mendick, Jupiter Artland and Edinburgh Art Festival. More info to be announced, keep your eyes peeled!
Lindsey Mendick, SH*TFACED opens on Saturday 15th July 2023.
