Tatty Devine & Fawcett Society
Extra, extra, read all about it!
Tatty Devine are delighted to announce our new charity partnership for 2018, the Fawcett Society.
As the UK’s leading charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights, Fawcett work tirelessly to raise awareness of issues such as the gender pay gap, equal power in politics and ‘challenge attitudes and change minds’ in the face of Brexit. But who was Millicent Fawcett? As a writer, union leader and suffragist, she made it her life’s work to secure women the right to vote, organising the first petition for women’s suffrage and later becoming President of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies from 1907-19. Acquiring 50,000 members, it was the largest organisation aiding female suffrage at the time, with Fawcett’s powerful and peaceful mass campaign an essential component in securing the first stage of voting rights for women in 1918.
As 2018 marks 100 years since women first gained the right to vote, we headed down to Parliament Square this morning for the unveiling of Millicent Fawcett’s statue, the first ever sculpture of a woman to grace Westminster. Can you believe it’s also the first to be created by a woman, conceptual artist Gillian Wearing OBE?! Now that’s girl power!
Shimmering bronze recreates Fawcett holding aloft a banner which reads “courage calls to courage everywhere”, taken from a speech given following the death of fellow campaigner Emily Wilding Davison at the 1913 Epsom Derby. Speaking of which, can you spy top secret jewellery in this snap?
We spotted Justine Simons, Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries and Creative Director Darrell Vydelingum both sporting our best-selling Votes for Women Brooch.
London’s first Night Czar and long time Tatty Devine fanatic, Amy Lamé worked the windswept look (with a little jewellery sneak peek, too!)
Like what you see? Stay tuned for an exciting announcement coming very soon…
