Catch Up With The Printed Peanut

Risographs, rich colours and rituals of everyday life: our collaborator, illustrator, The Printed Peanut, aka Louise Lockhart, is set to host her largest solo show to date. Opening Saturday 7th March 2026, it's time to hear all about the upcoming exhibition, Cake Crumbs and Lemonade at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. 

Hi Louise, can you describe your work in five words?

Papery, collagey, printy, colourful and Britishish.

What can we expect to see at Cake Crumbs and Lemonade?

I really wanted to make a show that’s a sort of antidote to the bad news that we’re bombarded with and to celebrate the normal, everyday things that bring joy. The show is a bright bunch of prints honouring the things we do on a British day out, enjoying timeless pleasures like a trip to the seaside or the fair.

I hope that anyone at any age will be able to relate to it and find something they can identify with. I loved playing about with making the work in traditional and old-fashioned ways too, using lots of analogue print techniques and handmade collages.

The show takes inspiration from Mass Observation, the social research project founded in 1937 to document daily life in Britain. What parts of daily life inspire you the most? And why?

I'm always looking for nice handmade things, such as handwriting on shop front signs or drawings on notices at school fairs. I love walking through my local market in Abergavenny and looking at the fruit and veg stalls, or just observing how people walk their dogs through the park. 

There’s so much endless talk of AI and the internet, but I think fundamentally, humans enjoy connecting with real humans. I hope to create art that observes and reflects these human interests back at us in a nice, colourful way, to cheer everything up a bit.

This is your biggest solo show to date. What made the Yorkshire Sculpture Park the perfect location for this? 

I’m originally from Yorkshire, and it’s somewhere I’ve always visited growing up. I’ve always daydreamed about having a show there, and I really can’t believe that it’s happening! I’ve never really done my own art before; I have mainly been a commissioned illustrator, so it’s been a big learning curve to focus on what I want to make for myself. 

It’s a fantastic space, and there have been so many inspiring exhibitions there; it’s a real honour. I’ve loved making merch for the shop too! I know my Tatty Devine pieces will go so well with the exhibition as there will be more sardine cans, florals and dog walkers on show!

Which Tatty Devine X The Printed Peanut design will you be wearing to your private view?

I love the Golden Edit ones, and these will go perfectly with the brass mobiles I’ve made, but for the opening, it might be just the right occasion to wear one of the really big, bold designs like the Love Heart Statement Necklace.
