History of the Name Necklace

WORD UP! 🗯 Our personalised Name Necklaces are the perfect way to display not only your name but a nickname, star sign, favourite food, anything goes... Be an early bird (with a bird charm, perhaps?) and start ticking off your festive gifting list or treat yourself today!

To celebrate our all time best seller, we thought we’d give you a brief history of our infamous necklaces, spread the word…

We’ve been designing and making our Original Name Necklaces since 2003. Myspace had just launched, and the world was shaking it like a Polaroid picture to Hey Ya! by Outkast. Initially they were super special Christmas gifts for Rosie and Harriet’s friends, and it wasn't long before friends of friends were asking if they could get one too, they soon realised they'd make the perfect personalised gift, and so the Name Necklace story began.

Our ‘Original’ font is from Harriet’s own handwriting, intrinsically translated into a digital typeface ready for laser cutting and perfect for that classic Name Necklace look. We added a charm to make sure it’s instantly recognisable as Tatty Devine. A few years later we developed our own fonts including our now signature Ladybug and swirly Sundae fonts. Billboard came soon after as the perfect typeface for when you need to shout about something, like GIRL POWER!

Fast Forward 9 years to 2012 when we took our relationship with Name Necklaces to the next level. We opened our first pop-up workshop at London’s infamous Selfridges as part of their Words Words Words concept store. What was meant to be a 6-week pop-up, lasted 3 years! Do you remember seeing us there? We soon became a celebrity favourite in-store, making Name Necklaces for the likes of Kate Moss, MIA, Lily Allen, Robbie Williams and even Madonna.

In the summer of 2012, we launched the enticingly named NAME NECKLACE NOW in our Covent Garden store with a huge party. To this day you can design your bespoke Name Necklace and have it made in-store right in front of you by our team, and we love helping you choose your perfect necklace.

For the launch, set designer Amy Harris took over our windows with her amazing mini figures holding up some of our favourite Name Necklace designs!

Every year since then we like to keep things fresh by launching new limited edition colour ways, exclusive charms, and getting our ghoul on with our Bloody font for Halloween in our Covent Garden store.

Sustainability is very much at the forefront at Tatty Devine, and in 2020 we proudly launched NEW 100% recycled acrylic to our colour choice.

So, bringing us to the present day, the Name Necklace has become one of our best-loved pieces of jewellery.  You can now choose from 5 different fonts, over 32 glossy acrylic colours, a whooping 13 charms and 4 different chain choices – phew!

Do you remember your first Name Necklace or have a Name Necklace story to share? We’d love to hear it! Design your new Name Necklace online now. Or why not pop to our Covent Garden store and we can laser cut yours while you wait, with prices starting at £27.50.
