How to make a basic necklace
"Cha cha chain"
You’ll need:
A length of fine chain
Ruler
Wire cutters, or an old pair of scissors
2 tiny jump rings
2 pairs of flat-nose pliers
2 small jump rings
1 lobster clasp
If you’re making a short necklace you’ll need approximately 40cm of chain, for a medium necklace about 60cm and for a longish necklace your measurement is about 80cm.
Measure your chain with a ruler and then cut with the wire cutters. You could use an old pair of scissors, but don’t use your best ones, as cutting chain will play havoc with the sharpness of the blades.
Open the tiny jump rings with the pliers. To do this grasp one tiny jump ring in one of the pairs of pliers, with the split in the jump ring facing upwards. Grab the second pair of pliers in the other hand, at right angles to the first pair, and use it to twist the jump ring apart at the split. A quarter turn towards you should do the trick. Don’t go to far, and don’t be too brutal.
Carefully attach one end of the chain to your open jump ring and then close the jump ring.
Open the small jump ring using the method above, and pop on the tiny jump ring on the end of the chain. Close the jump ring.
Do the same on the other end of the chain: attach the remaining tiny jump ring, then attach the remaining small jump ring to it and pop on the lobster clasp. Close the small jump ring.
Top TATTY tip
With some thick chains you can open the links with pliers, rather than snipping them with the wire cutters. With a really fat chain, get out the hacksaw!
