International Women's Day: Ways to Celebrate
It’s almost International Women’s Day! A day to celebrate women all over the world and their social, economic, cultural and political achievements, we LOVE it. Normally we would be getting prepared to hang out with you and celebrate women in style but as well all know things are a little bit different this year. We’re going to have a little reminisce on our favourite IWDs from the past years and tell you what virtual events we’ll be attending this year. So let’s get to it!

March 2020, just before our lives went a little crazy, we were lucky enough to have one of our last trips away and what better way to spend it than with you and the POW! Thanet team! We took over a former Woolworths down in Margate for a weekend of celebrating wonderful women.

We sat down for a chat with the inspirational broadcaster Amber Butchart, held Suffragette Bunting workshops, teamed up with The Vagina Museum to bust all the myths of the muff, heard Amy Zing and Deboragh Coughlan discuss speeches by incredible women and sat back to watch a series of short films from female directors before a having a drink and a boogie. What a day!

So we’re going back to 2018 when we launched our empowering collection GIRLS GOT IDEAS, a collaboration with Poppy’s Papercuts. Inspired by six superwomen from all walks of life, we took over the shop at Southbank Centre, where you could shop the collection and amazing art from our muses! Sparkling hula hoops by Marawa the Amazing to print from Poppy Chancellor herself, we had it all!

Wow, looking back at these we have held so many amazing events, we can’t forget our 2019 Fawcett Society collection refresh with pieces to Smash Stereotypes, 2018 designing a necklace for the WOW Festival and all the way back in 2016 taking over House of Vans for a brilliant Bunting workshop!

Onto this year, so it might be virtual but we can still have another International Women’s Day to remember!

Here’s Team Tatty’s top picks for this year:

Comedian Luisa Omielan is here to make you laugh till your sides hurt with her work in progress God Is A Woman on 12th March at 8pm. It’s all about how different history would be if there were more women in it… Way more interesting, we guess!

Teaming up with Pepper Your Talk, Young Barbican are hosting a panel of women about working in the creative industry and the importance of wellness for success. Hosted by Dior Bediako, join guest speakers Fisayo Longe, Nicole Crentsil and Twiggy Jalloh for Young Barbican Nights: Women in Business.

From poetry and music, to art trails and exhibitions POW! Festival 2021 is overflowing with exciting events the whole week of International Women’s Day.

Every Friday in March you can celebrate women in music with Live in the Library Online. Get your dancing shoes on, it’s time to dance with the likes of Jelly Cleaver and her house band.

Empowering talks, debates and virtual workshops, Women of the World Festival are hosting an event every day of March, sometimes even twice a day. They know how to treat us, whether you're into Greek Mythology, dancing with Afropunk Rio or How to Talk to Robots , won’t be disappointed with this line up!

Join Fawcett Society on March 8th at 5pm GMT for their Women Leading the Way panel. They’ll be talking all things politics, business, activism and journalism with Maria Miller MP and Dame Heather Rabbatts.

Still got some time to fill in your International Women’s Day schedule? Make sure you check out Now Gallery's virtual event with Polyester Zine! Founder and Editor in Chief Ione Gamble and Polyester podcast co-host Olivia Graham will be talking about Reclaiming Femme Identity.

Exploring non-binary and LGBTQ+ communities journey towards embracing their identities and using their voices as leader and organisers. This International Women's Day panel hosted by Fora in partnership with LBTQWomen explores intersections of race, ethnicity, cultural identity and queerness.

Looks like March is going to be a busy month, we better go and plan our time!
