Happy birthday, BALTIC!

All the best birthdays involve misty-eyed, cake-fuelled reminiscing and this is no different. Team Tatty Devine has been a fan of BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art ever since we first visited the converted flour mill. Standing proudly on the banks of the River Tyne, it’s a cultural destination not just for the North, but the world and we’ve been lucky enough to team up with the visionaries over the years.

I’M LOVING ANGELS INSTEAD

In 2008, to mark artist Anthony Gormley’s legendary sculpture Angel of the North and its 10th anniversary, we created a very special Tatty Devine tribute. The Tatty Devine Angel of the North Necklace can be found in jewellery boxes and adorning the necks of architecture fans worldwide. We scaled down the 200 tonne Gateshead icon and recreated its towering structure in shining graphite mirror acrylic, laser-cut and etched to recreate the rivets on its steel form. Look out for a celebratory update on this wearable icon, in gleaming gold mirror, exclusively available at BALTIC! Shop here.

SHOW YOUR BONES

In 2013, we headed to BALTIC for a spookily good Halloween jewellery making workshop. A host of witches, ghouls, warlocks and creatures of the night joined us to Swarovski jewels to candy coloured, cute Perspex bones. The result? A statement necklace you’d really (grave) dig. Reminisce with workshopper Rachel Kershaw here. It’s not the only time we’ve packed up our pliers for a road trip.

In 2015, our Co-Founders Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine headed back to Gateshead to share the story of their creative journey. We’re big believers in inspiring the next generation of makers and it’s one of our favourite excuses to make the trip to Gateshead and beyond! Fancy a trip over to the Toon? Peep our favourite North East spots here. From Chelsea School of Art to Brick Lane, via bags of leftover leather, chance encounters with Vogue magazine and a whole lot of Belle and Sebastian, BALTIC’s guests got the insider scoop. If you were there, share your snaps with us over on Instagram Stories - we’d love to see!

We loved getting crafty once more at workshops, and watching our first-time crafters make celebratory Bunting Necklaces and Parakeet Necklace which flew straight out the famous cultural centre’s doors!

Thank you for the love over the years, BALTIC. Add our NEW Angel of the North Necklace to your collection now and get involved with their birthday celebrations this weekend here and here.
